Leave a
Legacy in the Senior Officers Mess
Replacement
of the Senior Officers Mess High-Backed Dining Chairs to
Mark the 172 year History of the Hong Kong Police in
2016
Background
When the Senior Officers Mess (the Mess) was
first opened in 1955, the Government supplied fittings and furniture to the
Mess, which included 100 high-backed dining chairs. They are still in use in the sixth floor
dining room today. However, now,
due to wear and tear, there are little more than 40 left. Preservation of these historic chairs
has become increasingly difficult with the high usage rate of the dining
rooms.
172 New Chairs to Mark the 172nd
Anniversary of the Hong Kong Police
To continue the Mess tradition of providing an
elegant, aesthetic but relaxing environment in which officers can dine and
socialize, the Mess Committee intends to replace the current chairs with
172 new chairs to mark the 172nd Anniversary of the Hong Kong
Police in 2016. The new chairs are
to be made of oak, upholstered with genuine leather and engraved with the
current Hong Kong Police badge. Full
members1 of the Mess are invited, on a voluntary basis, to cover
the cost of the new chairs by way of donation. A brass plate (approximately 3cm x 8cm), engraved with the
name, rank and PI squad number of the donor will be affixed to the back of
the chair, allowing members to leave a legacy
in the Mess for decades to come. A sample chair has been placed at the Mess for members
inspection.

The replacement exercise is going to be
conducted on a “first come first served basis. Each chair is priced at HK$ 1,844
to mark the year 1844 when the Hong Kong Police was
established. Members may donate
more than one chair should the number of donations fall short of
172. In addition, donors may
place orders for chairs for their own private use at a cost of HK$ 2,000
each (without the brass plate). The
costs will be deducted from the donor’s Mess bill once order is
placed. Interested members may
complete the donation
form and send a PEN to the Mess Historian for reservation
(mailto:damonau@police.gov.hk). The deadline for reservation is 2016-03-01.
Tentatively, the new chairs are to be delivered to the Mess by the 3rd
Quarter 2016.
